For two tiny, bewildered people, it was a struggle for survival in a world of toys
It A Small World eBook Robert Bloch
It's Christmas Eve. Propper's Toy Shop is bustling with happy customers fawning over clever toys. Love makes the season extra bright for shop clerks Clyde and Gwen, who steal amorous glances at one another throughout their busy day.Clyde is just wrapping up the sale of an expensive toy train set when he catches glimpse of an oddly tall man entering the store. The strange man is dressed in black, has a hooked nose, and a bird's nest of white hair upon his head. Accompanying this giant of a man is a small boy, also dressed in black.
Clyde turns on his salesman charm to no avail. The two leave empty handed.
Soon after, the sizable gentleman returns. He selects a toy and presents it to Clyde for wrapping. Clyde is eager to please, takes the toy and disappears into the back room to complete his task.
When Clyde emerges from the back room the mysterious man and the boy are gone. ...and so is Gwen.
So begins Robert Bloch's entertaining tale.
"It's A Small World" is a far cry from Bloch's more famous, "Psycho". It's an appropriate read for all ages.
It's interesting how expectations can affect your opinion.
I think, because I expected something closer to Psycho, I was tempted to give this book three stars. The theme isn't original, but Bloch manages to make it his own.
Popper's Toy Shop emotes images akin to any Dickens tale of wonder.
A warning to jaded readers, there's no blood and gore. There are no vampires, no werewolves, no witches or monsters. This is just a fun little adventure story with a happy ending. That's why I gave it four instead of three stars.

It A Small World eBook Robert Bloch Reviews
It's a Small World is nearly as short as its protagonists, but its a fine example of an old sci-fi/fantasy thriller. It cuts right to the chase, with a hero who, like all good toy shop employees, turns out to be ready for any challenge that faces him, but only after the villain gets him in his clutches. Recommended for anyone who likes Dr. Cyclops or other mad scientist thrillers.
I started it and could not finish it. It was not compelling or attention grabbing to me. This book may capture someone's heart but not mine. Ho-hum.
As always, Mr. Bloch was superb in story plot, arc and conclusion. A gentle, fun read. I highly recommended it to anyone unfamiliar with Mr. Bloch.
